As soon as the temps get above freezing for a good length of time, I start hauling wet laundry outside to hang on the line. I love just about everything about hanging laundry to dry from the physical act of hanging, to the crispness of sun-dried clothes and linens to the huge savings we see on our gas bill. I love that it gets me outside numerous times each day. I love getting up early and sneaking outside to hang the laundry while the rest of the house is sleeping in blissful silence. I love that I am utilizing the awesome power of the sun, which is free by the way, to dry clothes instead of using gas and electricity. I love that I can do my laundry, for the most part, in the open air rather than the dank, dark basement. I feel like our clothes and linens get a little more love during the warm months and in return, they give us a little more love.
Do you hang clothes outside when you can? What about it do you love?
Air drying if on a clothes drying rack or on some type of clothes line is great for so many reasons. Saves energy and saves money. I believe it also sets a GREAT example of a simple way that each of us can make a much needed change on our personal energy usage. So often the problem seems so big that it is hard to think we can make a difference. But just by changing to air drying we reduce our energy use by about 6% each month. That is significant.

We hung everything to dry for years while we lived abroad (dryers are rare in Japan). Now, despite our lack of personal outdoor space, we line dry everything indoors. So much better for the world and clothes last much longer too!
